HRCSL is primarily established for the protection and promotion of human rights in Sierra Leone, and to provide for other related matters. As a national institution, the Commission has a crucial role to play in ensuring that efforts aimed at protecting human rights are well coordinated and monitored towards the enhancement of a culture of human rights. Among other things, HRCSL is empowered to monitor human rights situations, advise and keep the government informed; entertain complaints on, and investigate or enquire into, human rights violations on its own, document and report on human rights situations.
